PCW Certifications

Following recent discussions with Balen Insurance and its underwriters, (which have resulted in PCW being recognised as an insurable modality in its own right), PCW certifications are being revised and clarified.
This is to support Practitioner performance, maintain quality control and support public credibility and recognition, aswell as being in line with Balen’s requirements both for Training School insurance, and Business Insurance for the Association for PCW.

There are currently four certifications in PCW

• Foundation certification
• Practitioner certification
• Advanced practitioner certification
• Trainer certification

When I set out to create the model over twenty years ago, the world was very different.
Frank Farrelly, of course, specifically requested that his Provocative Therapy work include no certifications. (See the video “Why there are no certifications in Provocative Therapy)
That said, two decades after meeting Frank and teaching PCW in over twenty countries, a great deal has happened.
With the formal setup of The Association for PCW, with the associated infrastructure, code of conduct, and protocols and policies inline with current professional practice, and Balen’s including it on their list of indemnifiable modalities, it’s time to review all certifications to demonstrate that PCW Practitioners demonstrate proper professional practice.
Certifications need to be meaningful and reflect real skill and understanding.
The Certification course content listed below is provided in greater detail in the course handbooks and runs alongside any practice groups, CPD,discussion groups, or one on one mentoring.
These revisions apply to all of those certified in the Provocative Change Works model.

PCW Foundations certification

This is an introduction to the PCW model that allows students to explore its core elements. This is usually delivered over four online modules, where students are expected to be on camera while learning the core elements of the PCW model. The certification requires full attendance and a minimum of 10 hours of study and is not to be confused with the official PCW practitioner certification detailed below.
This training includes the following
• The misconceptions about “provocation” debunked so you can confidently explain this approach to sceptical colleagues and clients without apologising for it
• Exploration of the 27 PCW stances so you have a complete toolkit of provocative interventions you can deploy in any client session from day one
• Why PCW starts with “What’s the problem?” instead of “What do you want?” so you stop accidentally reinforcing your client’s stuck patterns and start disrupting them immediately
• The ethical and conversational use of provocation so you know exactly where the line is between productive challenge and recklessness, and never cross it
• The arm relaxation exercise so you can create a portable, repeatable scale of relaxation your clients can use anywhere, any time, without you being present
• The voice tempo exercise for dismantling unhelpful internal dialogue so you can resolve the negative self-talk that drives anxiety, self-doubt, and rumination, often in a single session
• Time framing and recording every session to create a feedback loop so your client keeps changing between sessions, not just during them, accelerating results without extra work from you
• Adherence to the policies and code of conduct of the Association for PCW

PCW Practitioner Certification

Those certified as ‘PCW practitioners’ have demonstrated the ability to understand the model’s core elements and use the skills in real-life client situations. In PCW, the coach’s manner and expression are crucial, so understanding is only part of what is needed.
PCW practitioners are individuals who want to use the PCW model to work with clients in coaching, therapy, business, or personal change. Previously, this certification was granted only after ten days of live training and the successful presentation of client case studies. This is usually conducted over 40 hours of study.
This is the material covered for this certification level.

• Awareness of core provocative exercises and ability to incorporate exercises with icon cards
• The use of psychoeducation in client work
• Ability to use nonverbal skills to assist in changing states
• Ability to demonstrate the Integration of hypnosis and provocation elements with ease
• Ability to improvise and grasp key improvisational skills in client sessions
• The ability to identify “the ingredients that make the problem, the problem”
• Ability to use provocative stances with ease and understand the stance implications
• Identify drivers for behaviour and recognise problem patterns in clients
• Submitting a PCW client session on video demonstrating 15 stances, direct, indirect and random approaches, voice tempo and arm relaxation elements
• Structure client sessions from initial contact to follow-up sessions and learn the best use of client notes
• Further exploration of variations of the voice tempo and arm relaxation approaches
• Understanding and using fractionation in client work
• Learning “catch-all patterns”
• Conversational use of metaphors in client sessions
• Working directly, indirectly and in a random fashion
• Adherence to the policies and code of conduct of The Association for PCW

.

Advanced PCW Practitioner Certification

This certification is awarded to individuals who have completed the PCW practitioner-level training. This is a higher skill level, and the evaluation includes submitting examples of client sessions.

This is what is included.

• The ability to deconstruct client problems and offer multiple solutions using different aspects of the PCW model
• Awareness of PCW Waltz time sequences in client sessions
• Eliciting and challenging client metaphors to assist with effective change
• Advanced hypnosis – catch all patterns in client work
• Advanced fractionation and metaphor work with clients
• Submitting four or more client cases for live evaluation and deconstruction
• Demonstrating and understanding psychoeducation when working with clients in a conversational manner
• Completion of an agreed project over 12 months using PCW skills for evaluation
• Advanced work in working directly, indirectly and in a random fashion
• Adherence to the policies and code of conduct of The Association for PCW

PCW Trainer certification

The requirements for this reflects PCW’s status as an indemnifiable and recognised model.
Trainers must first attain Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner certifications, so they have the experience and background in the model, and be using it in their own practice.
They also need to engage in CPD to ensure that their skills are up to date.
CPD opportunities may include group CPD sessions , and/or 1–1 mentorship, practice groups and discussion groups.
The PCW model is constantly developing as the members of the Association deepen and share their experience and collective learning and Trainers are expected to collaborate with this, and support lifelong learning in the field.
The Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner courses are the stepping off points for PCW use , not the end point.
There is therefore emphasis on Trainers continuing with CPD as well as running training sessions.
A trainer needs a full understanding of the model, as well as the skills to teach it to others.
This means knowing how to engage with a group, whether online or face to face.
A minimum of eight people constitutes ‘a group’ to ensure a sufficient learning opportunity for attendees.
PCW trainers are expected to run a minimum of two PCW foundations trainings each calendar year (each is an eight-hour structured training), engage in CPD, and assist with PCW events. There will be full mentorship and support available for new Trainers.
Being a PCW Trainer is a specific role. Some people might be excellent practitioners but have no interest in training, and some might be PCW board members but not certified PCW trainers.

In short, here’s the checklist for those to become PCW trainers

• Having completed PCW practitioner and advanced practitioner certification requirements
• Engaging in some form of monthly CPD , and mentorship with myself to ensure all skills are up to date
• Running two PCW Foundations trainings in each calendar year with submitted video for review
• All PCW trainer certifications are issued on a two-year renewable basis
• Adherence to the policies and code of conduct of The Association of PCW

Conclusion

The PCW model is constantly being reviewed and developed The certification process exists as a sign of recognition for those who have invested time in learning the model. As the creator of the model my focus is ensuring that all those who learn PCW do so with proper duty of care towards others. The certification process is a key part of further ensuring that the model is seen as a credible professional model of communication to help others.
