Why Definitions Matter in a Change Conversation

In a busy conversation, people often use a single word to carry an entire history: confidence, failure, respect, commitment. The word can sound solid while meaning something different to everyone involved.

What this means in practice

PCW practitioners learn to slow the moment down and ask what a word refers to in this person’s lived experience. What would we see or hear? When does it happen? What would count as a small exception? Clear definitions turn a vague problem into something that can be explored.

This is not an invitation to interrogate a client or win an argument. It is a way of making more room for choice. When a person can describe the pattern precisely, they can often notice its timing, its triggers and the moments when it is less convincing.

Useful practice questions include: What does that look like on a Tuesday afternoon? Who would notice first? What would be different if the problem were ten per cent smaller? The answers give both practitioner and client something real to work with.
